Clinical microbiology

Her research focuses on epidemiology, molecular characterization and population structure of multidrug-resistant bacterial pathogens as well as the evaluation and control of typing systems for epidemiological surveillance programs serving the fight against antibiotic resistance in industrialized as well as low- and middle-income countries. She has also worked extensively on the development, quality evaluation, cost-effectiveness and clinical impact of various microbiological diagnostic tools in an integrated approach aiming, for each clinical situation studied, at an optimal use of resources for optimized diagnosis and treatment. She is also working on the development of diagnostic tests in support of therapeutic alternatives to antibiotics, such as new rapid techniques to asses bacterial sensitivity to bacteriophages. Within the EPIV, her expertise serves the selection of new vaccine targets, the measure of the impact of (new) vaccines on microbial population dynamics and the development of innovative diagnostic tests in support of new vaccine strategies.

Marie Hallin MD PhD, is Clinical microbiologist since 2006 and has obtained, in 2010 at the ULB, a PhD in biomedical sciences on comparative genomics of epidemic clones of S. aureus in Belgium. She is Professor of Bacteriology at the Faculty of Medicine of the ULB. Her two main areas of expertise are the molecular epidemiology of bacteria and the evaluation of microbiological diagnostic methods.
